Labor-Sonoma Crowd Rallies for KPFA

More than 200 people joined a labor rally for KPFA in front of the station in Berkeley Saturday, July 24, 1999. Speaking in support of the station's locked-out staff and for local control of KPFA and Pacifica were representatives of the AFL-CIO's Central Labor Councils for Alameda County, the North Bay, and the South Bay (the latter has 110,000 members); Service Employees International Union Local 790 (San Francisco area); California Nurses Association; Health Care Workers Union Local 250 (45,000 workers in northern California); the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (speaker: International Vice President Chuck Mack); University Professional and Technical Employees; the Oakland Education Association; the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Bay Area; the AFL-CIO State Council; the California Labor Federation (2 million members); the United Auto Workers local 198; the National Writers Union; the Coalition of University Employees; and others.

Visible in the background is a hand-painted sign, "Sonoma County Wants Back KPFA." An estimated 200 people came from Sonoma County to rally in front of KPFA. Also present for the second weekend in a row was a contingent from Garberville in Humboldt County, 200 miles north of Berkeley.
